Luonto historiakuvan loimilangaksi? LuonnonympÀristölle annetut merkitykset pohjoiskarjalaisessa matkailussa
Nature and culture are often seen as two separate entities in the travel industry. In this article, it is argued that nature is an essential part of human culture, and nature tourism should also be interpreted through cultural concepts. Cultural nature is addressed by examining the historical imaginaries used in the tourist attractions within the North Karelia Biosphere Reserve in Eastern Finland. The main scope of interest is how nature is implicated in the local narratives of the past, and how history and nature are intertwined in nature attractions such as national parks. The findings will be viewed with the help of a museological significance assessment, which enables the examination of the different meanings given to cultural nature in tourism. The cultural information about local nature and human traces of human life in nature can be regarded as enhancing the attractiveness of the area and as constituting an integral part of the nature experience. National parks can be seen as nature museums, which originally sought to preserve samples of virginal forests, thus representing the nature relationship of the previous generations. Nature, the key attraction of the area, is deeply connected with the local history culture and imaginaries of the exotic wilderness of Karelianism. The national romantic view bypasses to some extent the local experience and stories by emphasising the 19th-century national romantic artists and images related to historical Border Karelia
Eheys ja ennakkoluulo : TyövÀenyhteisön ja kansakoulunopettajiston jÀnnitteinen suhde HelsingissÀ sisÀllissodasta 1930-luvulle
This study discusses return to peace in SörnĂ€inen, Helsinki, after the Finnish Civil War in 1918. Situated in (labour) community research the study examines the relationship between the local elementary (folk) school teachers and the SörnĂ€inen labour community. Methodologically, qualitative tools are complemented by using the notion of emotional communities and the method of close reading. The theoretical framework is the psychological resilience linked to return to peace from war and to recovery from crisis. Emotions are seen primarily as a social force sustaining emotional communities. Social resilience was communal, making oneâs own reference group crucial to recovery.
After the Civil War, the National Progressive Party-dominated management of the National Board of General Education defined national unity as the goal of education, but in the wake of the war, schools were made into a battleground of bottled-up emotions. The Civil War exacerbated the relations between the school teachers and the working-class population, and the emotional regime hardened by the experiences or interpretations of the war made it impossible to present alternative views of the other party. Still, the emotional communities analysed were not homogeneous; they contained within them smaller subcommunities, which acted as emotional refuges.
How the relations reached a crisis point was encapsulated in children. They saw a disconcerting chain of events, facing many different truths about what had happened. The teachersâ Fennomanian, education-based view of the Finnish people was shattered by the war, while among the workers, the defeat and the split of the labour movement laid to waste the ideal of a better world built with combined efforts. The grief was mixed with bitterness and the resultant ideas of revenge or a need for reconciliation.
Most of the elementary school teachers knew where they stood in these exceptional circumstances, but it was not easy. Many were drawn to social democratic ideas, sympathising with the efforts to improve the lot of the people, which made it hard for them to take a stand. In addition to rekindling a passion for the redeeming force of education, many teachers found in the Finnish kinship ideology a tool of social resilience and of managing their relationship to the ordinary Finnish-speaking people.
Among the teachers and the political labour movement alike, the resilience was grounded in building a better world through children and education. The left-wing socialist labour movement dissociated itself ever more clearly from the bourgeois education system, seeking to equip the Red orphans with an alternative worldview. Similarly, the teachers turned into action the self-accusations rising from the failure of their educational work. The crisis was proof of the inadequacies of education, which is why their own future work was key to Finnish national unity. All parties also endeavoured to awaken the working-class parents seen as too passive or as providing their children with the wrong sort of education.
Mental peace was not attained in the immediate aftermath of the war, but there were occasional incidences of calming down. The emotions aroused by the crisis, the way in which the war was interpreted and the creation of a new vision for the future helped to manage these emotions but did not enable an understanding of the other party. The crisis was also used as a rhetorical device to strengthen the contradictions between the working-class population and the teachers.Tutkimus esittelee ja arvioi rauhaan palaamista vuoden 1918 sisÀllissodan jÀlkeen Helsingin SörnÀisissÀ. To do this and situated in (labour) community research, the study examines the relationship between the local elementary (folk) school teachers and the SörnĂ€inen labour community. Methodologically, qualitative tools are complemented by using the notion of emotional communities â less often utilised in historical research â and the method of close reading. Careful close reading has sought to capture the subjectsâ emotional experiences and the interpretations arising from these experiences as closely as possible. The theoretical framework is the psychological resilience linked to return to peace from war and to recovery from crisis. Emotions are seen primarily as a social force sustaining emotional communities. Social resilience was similarly communal, making oneâs own reference group crucial to recovery from war.
After the Civil War, the National Progressive Party-dominated management of the National Board of General Education defined national unity as the goal of education, but in the wake of the war, schools were made into a battleground of a bottled-up past and clashing emotions. Sides had been taken and conclusions drawn. Once peace returned, people were expected to go on with their lives as before. The research shows that the Civil War exacerbated the relations between the school teachers and the working-class population, and that the emotional regime hardened by the experiences or interpretations of the war made it impossible to present alternative views of the other party or of the way that the war was conceived. Still, the emotional communities analysed were not homogeneous; they contained within them smaller subcommunities, which acted as emotional refuges.
How the relations reached a crisis point was encapsulated in children. They experienced the war and saw a disconcerting chain of events in its aftermath, facing many different truths about what had happened. In addition to rekindling a passion for the redeeming force of education, many teachers found in the Finnish kinship ideology a major tool of social resilience and of managing their relationship to the ordinary Finnish-speaking people, whom they could now again see in a positive light.
Among the teachers and the political labour movement alike, the resilience was grounded in building a better world through children and education. The left-wing socialist labour movement dissociated itself ever more clearly from the bourgeois education system, seeking through its own educational efforts to equip the Red orphans with an alternative worldview. Similarly, the teachers turned into action the self-accusations rising from the failure of their educational work. The crisis was proof of the inadequacies of education, which is why their own future work was key to Finnish national unity. All parties endeavoured to construct the future through children, striving to awaken the working-class parents seen as too passive or as providing their children with the wrong sort of education.

The emotions aroused by the crisis, the way in which the war was interpreted and the creation of a new vision for the future helped to manage these emotions but did not enable an understanding of the other party. The politics of atonement and reconciliation were not always practised in the classroom. The crisis was also used as a rhetorical device to strengthen existing contradictions based on prejudice between the working-class population and the teachers
Historical Reindeer Corrals as Portraits of Human-Nature Relationships in Northern Finland
Reindeer herding has been practised in northern boreal and subarctic regions of Fennoscandia for several centuries. The gathering and separation of reindeer for slaughter and calf marking are significant and cyclical activities of reindeer herding that are commonly carried out in reindeer corrals composed of circular-shaped fences of wood or stone construction leading into the corral. Using archaeological databases, we mapped historical reindeer corrals in northern Finland dating from the late 1800s to the 1960s for the entire reindeer herding area and characterized the legacies of their past use on present-day vegetation in PerĂ€pohjola. In total, 94 corrals were located. Reindeer separations created a niche for novel plant communities with increasing graminoids in relation to dwarf shrubs and formation of a dense birch grove. Corrals have also preserved old rare trees left standing inside the corral to provide shelter for reindeer. The positioning of the corrals in the landscape was usually planned in a way that utilized man-made constructions and natural barriers, such as peatlands, and the typical behaviour of the reindeer in combination with both. When the wooden constructions had collapsed and decomposed, only the different vegetation indicates their past existence.

Helsingin moninaiset karjalaiset muistin paikat
